Quarts e.V. | Josue Sanchez Cerrón

"Like a pagan god, he robs his god-father Huallallo Carhuincho of the most beautiful stars and shadows, the brightest rays of the sun, birds full of tenderness ... and he gives us his generous creative power."

Thus Sybila de Arquedas, the wife of the Peruvian writer de Arquedas, characterized the painting by Josue Sánchez Cerrón. The themes of his colorful and exciting images are determined by his own experience and the conflict between the ancient culture and life forms of the Andean village community and the ever-increasing European and North American influence.

Cerrón calls himself a non-academic painter. His art is rooted in the ancients' folk art, and he consciously links with the art of Indian cultures, developing them further into an independent individual painting. It is a composition of everyday and political themes, of Andine mythology and fantasy.

We also find mergers with Christianity, which have their own characteristics in the Andean region, as well as everyday scenes and festive motifs. Martin Lienhard said of his art: "Josue Sánchez Cerrón, who is by no means naive, becomes, for example, a future-oriented, non-elitist art, in terms of intellectual and artistic proximity to the created work of the Peruvian population."

Josue Sánchez Cerrón was born in Huancayo in 1945 and lives there until today in the Mantaro valley, 3400 meters above sea level, in the central highlands of Peru. From 1965-79 he studied painting and sculpture at the Escuela de Bellas Artes of the Universidad Nacional del Centro, Peru. Apart from works in Peru, his artistic work includes murals in churches in Germany, among others. in Aachen, Bonn and Constance.

His further artistic work includes illustrations in books and periodicals in Peru and Europe, as well as numerous publications in artist calendars in the Netherlands, Germany, as well as art studies on the study of myths and legends.
